Now that the Toronto Raptors have made history over the Golden State Warriors, NBA fans are moving on to the next big thing: The 2019 NBA Draft. Live streaming access to the event is limited, but you can still watch the 2019 NBA Draft on Kodi if you’re using the right addons and services.
Important note: Our guide only recommends official Kodi addons. The NBA Draft is one of the biggest NBA events of the year. Limited access means some sports fans turn to unofficial streams. However, several official streaming options let you watch the NBA Draft on Kodi, without the unreliable streams from addons that could put your privacy and security at risk.
To watch the 2019 NBA Draft on Kodi in Canada, the UK or anywhere else outside of the US you will need a VPN. We’ll explain how and which ones work.
Warning: Kodi should only be used for content to which you have the legal right to access. Neither the Kodi Foundation nor Comparitech advocates the use of Kodi for piracy.
How to watch the 2019 NBA Draft on Kodi with a VPN
If you’re in the US, you can get streaming access to the NBA Finals through ESPN. Several services offer ESPN streams, but you’ll need to sign up for free trials if you want to watch at no cost. Those outside of the US may still be able to access these services, but a VPN will be required. For all users, a VPN can help prevent ISP speed throttling and other data snooping that ISPs may engage in.
To get started with your VPN, do the following:
- Create an account with a trusted VPN service. We recommend IPVanish for Kodi users, but you may also want to consider: ExpressVPN, NordVPN, or CyberGhost.
- Install the VPN app on the same device as your Kodi app. You can also install a VPN on a router to cover all of your devices, but that’s a more complicated process. We recommend keeping the VPN app on the same device you use Kodi on, such as the Amazon Firestick
- Connect to a US-based server. Connect to a server in the US to access the ESPN stream.
- Install and stream from the Kodi addon that offers ESPN and the NBA Draft.
No Kodi addon is perfect. We can’t guarantee that you’ll be able to access any of the Kodi addons from abroad, or through a VPN. We recommend that you test your options before the 2019 NBA Draft is scheduled to begin, to give yourself time to explore alternatives.
You can watch the 2019 NBA Draft for free on Kodi using a few key sources. You’ll need to sign up for a free trial in order to stream for free. All streams carrying ESPN will be region-locked, so a VPN will be necessary if you’re outside of the US.
How to watch the 2019 NBA Draft on Kodi
ESPN is the sole source for the 2019 NBA Draft this year. If you’re in the US or have a US payment method, you can create a free trial account to either Sling TV (Orange package) or PlayStation Vue (Access package), both of which carry ESPN.
If you’re outside of the US, you might also want to consider USTVNow, which offers ESPN through its All Channels subscription. However, USTVNow does not provide a free trial, so you’ll need to pay $19 for access.
USTVNow Kodi addon – International access to the NBA Draft
USTVNow is a good option for anyone outside of the US willing to pay the cost. USTVNow is available internationally, without the need for a VPN bypass. The only catch is that you’ll need to pay $19 for the first month to get ESPN.
A useful USTVNow Kodi addon is available through the official Kodi addon repository.
To use this service, go to USTVNow.com and go to Plans. From there, pick the All Channels option. If you want to use USTVNow on Kodi, make sure you sign up with a unique email address and password. If you use the Register with Facebook option, you won’t be able to login to the Kodi addon.
PS Vue Kodi addon – Free trial subscription available (US)
The PlayStation Vue streaming service is available to US NBA fans. The service offers dozens of channels, including ESPN. There’s also a Kodi addon available that lets you connect to your PlayStation Vue account.
To sign up, you’ll need to go to the PlayStation Vue website and select the Access package. PlayStation Vue offers a 5-day free trial.
Once you’ve created your account, download the PS Vue Kodi addon from the official Kodi addon repository. Then, connect to your account by using your login information.
It may be possible to create a PlayStation Vue account from outside the US. If you have a US-based payment method, you may be able to use a VPN to create an account for free access to the NBA Draft.
Sling TV Kodi addon – Free trial subscription available (US)
Much like PlayStation Vue, Sling TV is an internet TV streaming service that gives you access to a selection of channels, including ESPN.
To get ESPN through Sling TV, you’ll need to go to the Sling.com website, then sign up for the Sling Orange subscription. Do not choose the 40% off deal, as this requires prepayment and offers no free trial. A regular Sling TV subscription offers a 7-day free trial.
Once you’ve signed up, you can download the Sling TV Kodi addon from the official Kodi addon repository. Your email address and password can be used to log in to the addon and access your Sling TV account.
How does the NBA Draft work?
The NBA Draft works by giving teams an opportunity to pick players from an available line-up of draftees. The 14 teams with the worst record are entered into a lottery for first picks. The two-round lottery took place in May, with the New Orleans Pelicans getting the first draft pick as a result. You can see the entire draft order on NBA.com.
Teams will pick from the available players who are currently unsigned to a team. Most of the best available draftees earned automatic entry into the draft after meeting the automatic entry criteria (which includes having 4 years of college or playing professionally for a non-NBA team from outside the US, among other criteria).
Other players are available for the draft after submitting their names as an “early entry” player and attending an NBA draft camp to determine their draft rank and scoring.
