Get Ready for Wi-Fi 8: Pre-Order, Wait for Black Friday, or Stick with Wi-Fi 7

Wi-Fi generations used to arrive like film sequels: louder numbers, same plot, and a marketing team that swears this one finally fixes the flat where the kitchen eats packets for breakfast. Wi-Fi 8 is different in one useful way. Vendors are shipping and taking pre-orders now, while most phones, sticks and laptops in your house are still Wi-Fi 6 or 7. Black Friday lands on 27 November 2026. Streaming homes need a decision matrix, not another brochure: buy early, wait for the sale circus, or stick with Wi-Fi 7.

I checked official pages and live listings on 10 October 2026. TBA stays TBA. Sold out stays sold out. Your ISP uplink and client devices still get a vote, badge or no badge.

What is confirmed (global)

From ASUS and TP-Link press materials (not a Discord rumour mill):

  • ASUS ROG Rapture GT-BN98: On 6 October 2026 ASUS said the quad-band Wi-Fi 8 gaming router is shipping. Pitch is reliability, mid-to-long-range consistency, Adaptive QoE, WiFi Insight, dual 10G plus four 2.5G ports, not “triple your Netflix somehow”.
  • ASUS Canada first, worldwide October, US TBA: GT-BN98 series is in Canada now, wider release in October, with US details to follow. ZenWiFi BN12 Wi-Fi 8 mesh is also due in October; US timing separate.
  • TP-Link Archer 8 Ultra: Pre-orders opened 30 September 2026 in the UK, Germany, Australia, Canada and more. Tri-band Wi-Fi 8 on Broadcom silicon. Vendor lab claims (up to 33% more mid-to-long-range throughput vs Wi-Fi 7, up to 24% more consistent under interference) are controlled-test figures, not a promise for every flat with foil wallpaper.
  • Standard vs clients: Full Wi-Fi 8 features need supporting clients. Today you mostly buy a router that is nicer to devices you already own. TP-Link says backward-compatible benefits work without Wi-Fi 8 clients; the full feature set still wants matching clients.

Regional availability and verified prices

Only numbers I could read on live pages or fetched press pieces. US dollar MSRPs stay out until someone publishes them without a shrug.

  • UK, TP-Link Archer 8 Ultra (Tapo store): Regular price £899.99, ships from 15 November 2026. At check time the UK storefront showed Sold out, with a £230 off in cart promo still advertised (that maths lands at £669.99 if stock returns). TechRadar earlier reported UK pre-order at £669.99 rising to £899.99 after the early window. Do not assume the discount checkout still works while the page says sold out.
  • UK, ASUS GT-BN98 (SCAN): £789.98, item due 15 October 2026 (SCAN product page, checked for this article).
  • Canada, ASUS ROG Rapture GT-BN98 Pro: ASUS Canada estore lists C$1,299.99.
  • Australia, Archer 8 Ultra: TechRadar reported pre-orders at AU$1,499.99. I am citing that report, not a second live AU cart scrape from this morning.
  • United States: ASUS still says US availability for the GT-BN98 series and ZenWiFi BN12 will be announced separately. TP-Link’s US press note points regional sites for pricing. No verified US street price in this article.
  • Black Friday 2026: Friday 27 November 2026 (timeanddate US holiday calendar).

Buy early, wait, or stick with Wi-Fi 7

Pick a path based on your house, not the press release adjective list.

  • Buy early if: you have multi-gig ISP, many concurrent 4K streams plus calls and downloads, dead zones or interference are the real problem (not a 40 Mbps uplink), and you want multi-gig Ethernet ports now. Canada ASUS stock, UK SCAN due mid-October, or a TP-Link pre-order with stock can fit heavy homes that treat the router as infrastructure, not a trophy.
  • Wait for Black Friday (27 Nov) or later if: today’s mesh can limp to late November, you want a softer early-adopter tax, or your region is still TBA / sold out. November is when retailers pretend a £900 box was always £650. No guarantee every SKU discounts, but waiting is free if Wi-Fi 7 already works.
  • Stick with Wi-Fi 7 if: clients are still Wi-Fi 6/7 (most are), the ISP is the bottleneck, or your Wi-Fi 7 mesh already keeps the house calm. If you already bought 7, chill. Chasing an 8 badge while every client speaks 7 is how marketing wins. Ethernet to the main living-room box still beats a generation chase for 4K stability more often than the hero video admits.

Multi-4K streams, mesh coverage and ISP ceilings matter more than the number on the box. Solid Wi-Fi 7 on a 500 Mbps plan will not grow a second ISP because you spent C$1,300.

Dated checklist (from Saturday 10 October 2026)

  • Now to 14 October: Note real ISP speed (speedtest, not the brochure), concurrent 4K streams, and whether the main TV box has Ethernet. If Ethernet is “maybe behind the cabinet”, fix the cable first.
  • 15 October 2026: SCAN UK lists GT-BN98 due. Confirm stock and courier dates before treating a pre-order email as a finished install.
  • Mid-November (watch 15 Nov): UK Archer 8 Ultra ship-from date on Tapo. Recheck sold-out status and any cart discount. Pre-order cliffs are real; TechRadar flagged the UK jump from £669.99 toward £899.99.
  • Through late November: Compare early quotes with Black Friday banners. Tiny discount plus a calm Wi-Fi 7 mesh means keep the money.
  • 27 November 2026 (Black Friday): Buy only if coverage or multi-gig ports are missing. Skip if the only upgrade is the number eight on the box.
  • After Black Friday: Wi-Fi 8 clients will still be scarce. Upgrade phones and laptops on their own schedule.

Traps worth skipping

  • “Wi-Fi 8 ready” clients that are not Wi-Fi 8. Ready often means “will connect somehow”. Full 802.11bn features need matching clients. Read the small print before you congratulate yourself.
  • Pre-order price cliffs. UK Archer pricing already showed a cheap-now, dear-later pattern in coverage and on the Tapo regular price. Sold-out pages love advertising discounts you cannot complete.
  • Ignoring the ISP uplink. A 19 Gbps tri-band headline does not inflate a 100 Mbps fibre plan. Measure first.
  • Mesh brand lock-in. EasyMesh and AiMesh promises vary by firmware and vendor. Mixing brands “because the box said mesh” is how you invent a second support ticket.
  • Assuming Wi-Fi 8 triples streaming quality. It does not, not while clients and the ISP are the ceiling. Vendors talk consistency and interference; they are not rewriting physics for your living room.

While you argue with the router aisle, the box behind the telly still has to hold a stable stream. A certified Google TV or Android TV player with Ethernet (or at least honest Wi-Fi 6) often fixes more buffering than another generation of access-point theatre:

Best IPTV boxes to buy

These are certified Android TV / Google TV media boxes and sticks that can run players and licensed apps from Google Play. They are not pirate hardware. They do not come with channels or playlists. I am not claiming I personally lab-tested every SKU this month.

Buy one of these when: Fire TV sideload is a hassle on your model, you want Play Store apps on a proper TV OS, or you want a dedicated player shell behind the sofa. No Fire TV device is on this shortlist.

Still shopping for a Fire TV device? Fine for Prime Video and the Appstore universe. Not the shortlist above. And none of these boxes magically make unlicensed streams legal.
