VPN adverts all sell the same fantasy: one click, total privacy, and the vague implication that a hoodie-wearing hacker is currently reading your shopping list. Six big brands dominate that pitch in 2026. I checked their official pricing and feature pages on 28 October 2026 and lined them up side by side: NordVPN, Surfshark, IPVanish, CyberGhost, PureVPN and Ivacy, plus NordPass as a password manager bonus.
Prices move weekly and renewal rates are where the small print lives. Where a site showed sterling, I quote sterling. Where it only showed US dollars (even on a UK URL), I quote dollars and tell you to confirm the live checkout total. I am not inventing Mbps “speed test” numbers either. Run speedtest.husham.com with the VPN off, then on a nearby server, and trust your own line more than a billboard.
A VPN encrypts your traffic and masks your IP. It is useful on hotel Wi-Fi, travel, and when you want your ISP to see less of what you do. It is not a free Netflix subscription, a licence for unlicensed streams, or a magic “unblock everything” button. For Fire Stick buffering tips with a VPN, see my earlier piece on fixing Fire Stick buffering with Surfshark, NordVPN or IPVanish. For hotel Wi-Fi specifically, read hotel and public Wi-Fi streaming privacy without the hype.

Quick comparison table (checked 28 October 2026)
| VPN | Simultaneous devices | Headline long-plan price (official, 28 Oct 2026) | Money-back | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | 10 | Basic from $3.49/mo on 2-year ($94.23 for first 27 months); UK checkout localises with VAT | 30 days | Polished apps, audited no-logs, all-rounder |
| Surfshark | Unlimited | Starter/One £1.79/mo (£48.33 for first 27 months); One+ £2.89/mo (£78.03) | 30 days | Households with many gadgets, Fire TV / IPTV players |
| IPVanish | Unlimited | Essential from $2.19/mo ($52.56 for first 2 years) | 30 days | Unlimited devices on a tighter budget |
| CyberGhost | 7 | From $2.19/mo on 26-month plan ($56.94 first term); page lists USD even on en_GB | 45 days (14 monthly) | Longest refund window, streaming-oriented UI |
| PureVPN | 10 (add-ons for more) | Standard from $1.69/mo on 5-year ($101.55 billed) | 31 days | Long commitment deals, extra multi-login add-ons |
| Ivacy | 10 | Long plans from about $1.69/mo on current order offers; monthly around $12.95 | 30 days | Budget long-term plan if you accept a smaller brand |
Every figure above is an introductory long-term rate unless I say otherwise. After the first term, most of these renew at a higher yearly or monthly price. Set a calendar reminder.
NordVPN
NordVPN is the loudest brand in the room, and for once the feature list mostly matches the noise. Official pages confirm 10 simultaneous connections, servers across 225+ locations, a 30-day money-back guarantee, and three consumer tiers: Basic, Complete and Prime (Ultimate Max in some UK/EU marketing).
Price (official pricing page, 28 Oct 2026): 2-year deals include 3 extra months. Basic $3.49/mo ($94.23 for the first 27 months), Complete $3.99/mo ($107.73), Prime $6.99/mo ($188.73). Sales tax or VAT may apply at checkout. UK visitors usually see a sterling total; I could not re-load a clean UK checkout figure today because Nord’s pricing site sits behind bot protection, so treat the live page behind the link as the price that counts. For a deeper product walkthrough, see What Is NordVPN? Features, Audits, Prices and What It Is Not For.
Features worth caring about: WireGuard-based NordLynx, obfuscated servers, Double VPN, Meshnet, Dark Web Monitor on all plans. Complete and above add desktop anti-malware, ad/tracker blocking and a cross-platform password manager. Basic is “just the VPN” with scam/phishing domain filtering.
Speed and streaming: Nord markets itself as the fastest VPN based on third-party tests (including Artifact Security in June 2026, per its own footnote). I will not reprint their Mbps charts as gospel. For streaming, it is a strong everyday pick when a nearby server behaves; results still vary by title, CDN and time of day.
Best for: people who want a polished app on phone, PC and TV boxes, care about independent no-logs audits, and can live with a 10-device cap. Skip it if you need truly unlimited connections for a house full of sticks and tablets.
Surfshark
Surfshark is the one that quietly wins the “how many devices” argument. Official FAQ and pricing pages state unlimited simultaneous connections on paid plans (free trials are capped at 3). Apps cover Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, Android TV, Apple TV and Fire TV.
Price (official UK pricing page, 28 Oct 2026): Starter and One at £1.79/mo (£48.33 for the first 27 months, VAT may apply). One+ at £2.89/mo (£78.03 for the first 27 months). 30-day money-back guarantee. Server claim on the same pages: 4500+ servers in 100 countries, with 10 Gbps upgrades called out in marketing copy.
Features: CleanWeb (ad/tracker/malware blocking), Bypasser (split tunnelling), Dynamic MultiHop, Camouflage/NoBorders modes, Alternative ID on higher tiers, plus One/One+ bundles for antivirus and Incogni-style data removal. Dedicated IP is an add-on.
Fire TV and IPTV players: If the job is putting Surfshark on a Fire TV Stick for privacy on public or hotel Wi-Fi, use the Fire-focused deal page at husham.com/go/surfshark-firetv. If you run a licensed IPTV player (TiviMate, IPTV Smarters, Formuler MYTVOnline and friends) and want the VPN on the same box, the IPTV-oriented offer is at husham.com/go/surfshark-iptv. Player-only framing: these links are for securing the player app and the device. They do not sell playlists, and a VPN does not make an unlicensed stream legal.
Best for: families, flatshares and anyone with more than ten gadgets. Also my default mention when the device is a Fire Stick or an Android TV player box.
IPVanish
IPVanish also advertises unmetered / unlimited devices on one account. Official pricing (28 Oct 2026) lists Essential, Complete and Advanced. The 2-year Essential plan is $2.19/mo ($52.56 for the first 2 years), Complete $2.79/mo ($66.96), Advanced $3.29/mo ($78.96). Monthly Essential is $14.99. 30-day money-back. The public page showed US dollars; confirm the GBP total your bank will see at checkout.
Features: WireGuard, OpenVPN and others, kill switch, split tunnelling, SOCKS5, obfuscation, Threat Protection, RAM-only servers. Network claim: 3,650+ servers across 150 locations. Complete adds next-gen antivirus; Advanced adds 1 TB cloud storage and a Secure Browser.
Speed and streaming: Marketing leans on WireGuard and “upgraded servers”. Streaming is listed as a supported use case on the pricing page. As always, try a nearby city first and measure with your own speed test.
Best for: unlimited devices without paying Surfshark’s One+ extras, if you are fine with a US-dollar price list and IPVanish’s brand profile.
CyberGhost
CyberGhost caps you at 7 simultaneous devices, which is the tightest limit in this line-up. Romania-based, Deloitte-audited no-logs claim, apps for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Linux, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV and more.
Price (official en_GB offer page, 28 Oct 2026): amounts are marked in US dollars even on the UK URL. Long plan: $2.19/mo billed $56.94 for the first 26 months, then $56.94 annually. Six-month plan $6.99/mo. Monthly $12.99. Money-back is the headline win here: 45 days on longer plans, 14 days on monthly. Do not trust a third-party GBP conversion; use the checkout total.
Features: WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2, kill switch, DNS/IP leak protection, split tunnelling, NoSpy servers, streaming-oriented server categories in the apps. Marketing claims NextGen 10 Gbps servers suited to 4K. Servers in 100 countries.
Best for: anyone who wants a long try-before-you-commit window, and households that fit under seven connections. Skip it if you need ten-plus devices without putting the VPN on the router.
PureVPN
PureVPN officially supports 10 simultaneous connections (support article updated 6 February 2026), with a Multi-login add-on if you need more. Order page (28 Oct 2026) pushes Black Friday style long plans: Standard from $1.69/mo ($101.55 billed for 5 years), Plus $2.69/mo ($161.40), Max $3.39/mo ($203.40), plus shorter 2-year and 1-year options. 31-day money-back guarantee. Again, the public order page showed dollars.
Features: full VPN plus tracker blocker; higher tiers add password manager, data removal and dark web monitoring. Port forwarding, dedicated IP, residential network and extra multi-logins are paid add-ons. Useful if you know you need those knobs. Easy to overspend if you click every add-on like a supermarket meal deal.
Best for: buyers hunting the lowest headline five-year rate who will actually cancel or renegotiate before renewal, and people who want optional port forwarding or dedicated IP without changing providers.
Ivacy
Ivacy is the budget sibling energy in this set. Official support states 10 simultaneous connections on one account. Current order offers (28 Oct 2026) advertise long plans from about $1.69/mo on multi-year deals, with monthly billing around $12.95. 30-day money-back. Apps span Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Android TV, Fire Stick, Kodi and routers, per Ivacy’s download pages.
Caveat: Ivacy and PureVPN share a corporate neighbourhood and overlapping marketing language. Always finish checkout on the Ivacy domain you intended, and keep the confirmation email. Server counts on marketing pages disagree with each other across the site (I saw both “5700+” and “6500+” style claims), so I am not treating any single server total as gospel.
Best for: cost-first buyers who want ten connections and will verify streaming themselves. Not my pick if you want the most polished apps or the strongest third-party audit trail.
Bonus: NordPass password manager
A VPN hides the pipe. A password manager stops you using “Password123” on every site. NordPass is Nord Security’s vault: Free allows one active session; Premium unlocks multi-device use plus Password Health, Data Breach Scanner, secure sharing and emergency access; Family covers six separate vaults. Official plans pages confirm a 30-day money-back guarantee on Premium.
I could not pull a stable UK sterling price from NordPass’s pricing page this session (bot challenge), so I am not inventing one. Check the live NordPass offer at checkout. NordVPN’s Complete tier also bundles a cross-platform password manager, which is why the “do I need both?” question has its own article: NordVPN vs NordPass: What’s the Difference and Do You Need Both?.
Which is best for whom?
| If you… | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Want the safest “default” VPN with audits and polished apps | NordVPN | 10 devices, strong feature set, Complete adds extras you might actually use |
| Have a house full of phones, sticks and tablets | Surfshark | Unlimited devices; clear UK sterling price today |
| Need Surfshark specifically on Fire TV | Surfshark Fire TV offer | Same unlimited-device VPN, Fire-focused landing page |
| Run a licensed IPTV player and want Surfshark on that box | Surfshark IPTV offer | Player-only use: privacy for the player, not a playlist shop |
| Want unlimited devices at a lower headline dollar rate | IPVanish | Unmetered connections; fewer bundle bells than Surfshark One+ |
| Want the longest refund window | CyberGhost | 45-day money-back on long plans; 7-device cap |
| Are locking in a multi-year deal and may need add-ons | PureVPN | Aggressive long plans; multi-login and dedicated IP as extras |
| Want the cheapest-looking long plan and accept a smaller brand | Ivacy | 10 devices, budget marketing; verify checkout and renewal yourself |
| Need a password vault more than another VPN | NordPass | Different job to a VPN; Free is one session, Premium is multi-device |
If you are putting a VPN on a router so every device in the house is covered in one hit, that is a different shopping list. Start with best VPN routers for IPTV with Wi-Fi 6 and protocol support.
What I deliberately did not claim
- Exact Mbps rankings. Speeds depend on your ISP, Wi-Fi, server load and protocol. Test locally.
- Guaranteed Netflix, BBC iPlayer or “every streaming app” success. Providers claim streaming support; CDNs fight back. Try the money-back window.
- Frozen UK sterling for every brand. Only Surfshark gave me a clean GBP price on its official pricing page today. Others showed USD or blocked automated UK checkout. Always read the final total before you pay.
- That a VPN legalises anything. It does not. Especially not unlicensed IPTV streams.
Pick the device limit and refund window that match your household, pay attention to renewal prices, and keep the confirmation email. That beats chasing whichever homepage is currently shouting “89% OFF” the loudest.
Best IPTV boxes to buy
These are media boxes and sticks that can run players and licensed apps. The first six are Google certified Android TV or Google TV devices with Google Play; the last one, the Formuler, runs its own Android and is not certified. They are not pirate hardware. They do not come with channels or playlists. I am not claiming I personally lab-tested every SKU this month.
Buy one of these when: Fire TV sideload is a hassle on your model, you want Play Store apps on a proper TV OS, or you want a dedicated player shell behind the sofa. No Fire TV device is on this shortlist.
- NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro: the premium pick, a certified Android TV player with AI upscaling, Dolby Vision/Atmos and Gigabit Ethernet for the main living-room telly. Amazon UK | Amazon US | Amazon DE | Amazon FR | Amazon IT
- Google TV Streamer 4K: solid Google TV living-room default with Ethernet, 32GB storage and Dolby Vision/Atmos. Amazon UK | Amazon US | Amazon DE | Amazon FR | Amazon IT
- Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen): Google TV box with 32GB storage, Wi-Fi 6 and Dolby Vision/Atmos, the cheaper box route than the Streamer. Amazon UK | Amazon US | Amazon DE | Amazon FR | Amazon IT
- Xiaomi TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen): budget Google TV stick with Wi-Fi 6 and Dolby Vision/Atmos when you want HDMI-simple, not a full box. Amazon UK | Amazon US | Amazon DE | Amazon FR | Amazon IT
- Budget Google TV 4K player: a cheaper certified Google TV player for a second telly. The model differs by store, so each link names the one you get there. MECOOL KD3 (Amazon UK) | onn. Google TV 4K Streaming Box (Amazon US) | Strong LEAP-NOVA-X (Amazon DE) | Strong LEAP-NOVA-X (Amazon FR) | Strong LEAP-NOVA-X (Amazon IT)
- MECOOL MEon1: Google TV certified 4K box with AI upscaling and 32GB storage for a dedicated player behind the sofa. Amazon UK
- Formuler Z12 Ultra SE: the newest Formuler box, built around MYTVOnline 4 for IPTV playlists. It runs Formuler’s own Android rather than certified Google TV, so there is no Netflix in HD and it is the one box here without Google certification. Formuler Z12 Ultra SE (Amazon UK) | Formuler Z12 Ultra SE (Amazon US) | Formuler Z12 Ultra SE (Amazon DE) | Formuler Z12 Ultra SE (Amazon FR) | Formuler Z12 Ultra SE (Amazon IT)
Still shopping for a Fire TV device? Fine for Prime Video and the Appstore universe. Not the shortlist above. And none of these boxes magically make unlicensed streams legal.
