Android Fire TV Sticks Are Ending: Buy 4K Max Before Vega Takes Over (Sep 2026)

Pocket-lint put it bluntly on 3 September 2026: the end of Android Fire TV Sticks is near. Cord Busters already had Amazon’s developer wording on the record. Put those together and the UK buying question for mid-September is not “is Vega real?” It is “how many Fire OS sticks are left on the shelf before a late-September hardware refresh eats them?”

Short answer: the last consumer Fire TV Sticks Amazon still sells on Android-based Fire OS are the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus and Fire TV Stick 4K Max. The refreshed Fire TV Stick HD and the Fire TV Stick 4K Select already run Vega OS. Amazon’s own developer site says starting with the 4K Select, all future Fire TV Sticks will run on Vega. Vega does not do consumer sideloading the way Fire OS did.

What is not confirmed: a dated invite for a September 2026 Amazon devices show, or named successors for the 4K Max and 4K Plus. Pocket-lint’s warning is historical pattern plus ageing SKUs. If you only want Netflix, Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Disney+, NOW and the usual store apps, Vega is fine for most living rooms. Fall refresh watch: late September historically matters

Pocket-lint’s timing note is the bit UK buyers should not shrug off this week. Amazon’s hardware cadence often lands toward the end of September. If new 4K Max / 4K Plus class sticks appear, Amazon’s own “all future sticks run Vega” rule means those replacements will not be Fire OS.

Amazon may keep selling leftover Fire OS stock for a while. Leftover stock is not the same as a product line still being made. Once the warehouse clears, the Android stick era in Amazon’s own catalogue is over.

So the buy window for a new Fire OS stick is “while these two SKUs are still the current models,” not “forever because Amazon said multi-OS once.”

Fire TV Cube and Fire OS 16: the one open door

Pocket-lint’s hope case is the Fire TV Cube. When Amazon said future sticks go Vega, it did not automatically sentence the Cube. The current Cube is still Fire OS, last refreshed in 2022, and increasingly expensive for its age. Amazon has also told the developer world it is working on Fire OS 16 (Android 16 based) and to prepare for devices on it.

That could be a Cube, a TV, or something else. It is not a promise that sticks stay open. Do not wait on a Cube rumour if you need a stick this month. Do keep an eye on Cube news if you want a set-top box that might remain on Fire OS.

1. Need sideload / Kodi / custom launchers on a stick? Buy a current 4K Max or 4K Plus while they are still the Fire OS models on Amazon UK. Read the listing for OS language. If it says Vega, walk away.
