Every streaming box company on Earth has the same marketing department. It lives in a room with no windows, it has never connected anything to a television, and it believes the words “AI powered” can be stapled to a plastic rectangle to add thirty quid. So once in a while I go through the shortlist on husham.com, throw out what stopped making sense, and keep what still does its job: play your legal apps and your own player without drama.
This October refresh has one twist worth explaining. The fifth box on the list is now a different device depending on which Amazon you shop at. Not because I lost a coin toss, but because the box I would pick simply is not sold everywhere. More on that silliness below.
First, the ground rules, because some people still think an “IPTV box” arrives preloaded with every channel on the planet. It does not. Six of the seven devices here are certified Android TV or Google TV players that run apps from Google Play. The seventh, a Formuler, runs its own Android and I will be upfront about what that costs you. All of them come with zero channels, zero playlists and zero magic. If you pay for a legal service, these play it nicely. If someone sells you a box that “includes everything”, that is not a box, that is a future court case with a remote control.
1. NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro: the old king nobody managed to dethrone
The SHIELD TV Pro is a 2019 design, which in streaming box years makes it roughly a Victorian. And yet it is still first on the list, because nobody has actually beaten it. NVIDIA’s own spec sheet lists a Tegra X1+ processor with a 256 core GPU, 3GB of RAM, 16GB of storage that you can expand over USB, Gigabit Ethernet, two USB 3.0 ports, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and AI enhanced upscaling up to 4K at 60fps. It also runs Plex Media Server, which most of the competition cannot do without fainting.
The catch is the obvious one: it is old, it is pricey, and stock moves around. Some Amazon stores sell it through marketplace sellers rather than Amazon itself, so check who the seller is before you click buy. If you only want one box for the main telly and you hate waiting, this is still it. Amazon UK | Amazon US | Amazon DE | Amazon FR | Amazon IT

If you are wondering whether it is still worth the money in 2026, I went through that question properly in my SHIELD TV Pro buy or skip checklist.
2. Google TV Streamer 4K: the sensible one
Google replaced the Chromecast with a little doorstop shaped box and called it the Google TV Streamer. Google’s spec page lists 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a proper Ethernet port at 10/100/1000Mbps, HDMI 2.1, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Dolby Atmos, and a Thread border router for smart home gadgets. Google also promises five years of security updates, which is more commitment than most streaming apps show to their own price lists.
It is the box I would hand to a relative who phones me every time the TV says “Input”. It just works, it has wired networking, and it has enough storage that you will not be uninstalling apps like a game of Jenga. Amazon UK | Amazon US | Amazon DE | Amazon FR | Amazon IT
3. Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen): the cheaper box route
Xiaomi’s official specs give the third generation Box S a quad core processor up to 2.5GHz, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, HDMI 2.1, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Dolby Audio and DTS:X. That is a lot of letters for the money. What it lacks is an Ethernet port, so if your router lives in another postcode, plan accordingly.
Think of it as the Streamer’s cheaper cousin who skipped the gym but still turns up on time. Amazon UK | Amazon US | Amazon DE | Amazon FR | Amazon IT

4. Xiaomi TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen): for the HDMI and done crowd
Sometimes you do not want a box. You want something that hides behind the telly and never speaks of it again. Xiaomi lists the second generation stick with a quad core Cortex A55 chip, 2GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, Wi-Fi on 2.4GHz and 5GHz, Bluetooth 5.2, AV1 decoding and Dolby Atmos and DTS:X audio decoding. Eight gigabytes is the honest weak spot. Install a sensible handful of apps, not your entire life.

5. The budget slot that changes passport at every border
Here is the twist. My favourite budget pick in Europe is the Strong LEAP-NOVA-X. Strong says it is a Google TV certified stick on Android 14 with an Amlogic S905X5M chip, a dedicated NPU for AI upscaling, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, Dolby Vision and HDR10+. Thirty two gigabytes on a stick is genuinely rare. Lovely. Except Amazon UK does not have the UK version in stock, and Amazon US does not sell Strong at all. Global product launch, local product reality. Classic.
So slot five is a different device in each store, and each link below names exactly what you get:
- UK: MECOOL KD3. MECOOL lists it as a Netflix and Google certified stick with an Amlogic S905Y4, 2GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, dual band Wi-Fi 5, AV1 decoding and HDR10. Older and simpler, but certified, which is the whole point. MECOOL KD3 on Amazon UK
- US: onn. Google TV 4K Streaming Box. Walmart’s own brand box launched in 2023 for about $20 and became the cheap Google TV box reviewers kept recommending. It is mostly a Walmart product, so on Amazon US check the seller and the price before buying. onn. Google TV 4K Streaming Box on Amazon US

6. MECOOL MEon1: the UK only wildcard
MECOOL’s MEon1 uses the same new generation Amlogic S905X5M family, and MECOOL lists Google TV on Android 14, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage with a microSD slot, Wi-Fi 6, a 10/100 Ethernet port, two USB 2.0 ports, HDMI 2.1, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and official Netflix certification. The Ethernet port is the slow 100Mbps kind, which is still plenty for 4K streaming but will not win any bragging contests. On the five Amazon stores I use it is only listed in the UK right now. 7. Formuler Z12 Ultra SE: the one your inbox keeps asking about
This one joins the list for a simple reason: it is the box readers keep asking me about. Formuler has a loyal following among people who live inside their IPTV player all day, and the Z12 Ultra SE is the newest box in the range. It is built around MYTVOnline 4, Formuler’s own player app, which is the main reason anyone buys a Formuler. You load your own legal playlist or service login into it, and it gives you a proper TV guide, catch up where your provider supports it, and recordings to the box’s storage. It does not ship with channels, because nothing on this list does.
Formuler’s own spec sheet lists a quad core Cortex A55 chip, 2GB of RAM, 64GB of storage with a microSD slot, Android 12, AV1 and HEVC decoding at 4K 60fps, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HLG, Dolby Atmos, tri band Wi-Fi 6E, Gigabit Ethernet, one USB 3.0 and one USB 2.0 port, and an optical output. It shares the bigger case of the Z12 Ultra and comes with the backlit BT3 voice remote. Roughly £169 in the UK, $229.99 in the US and about €215 on Amazon France and Italy when I checked.
Now the honest bit, and it matters. The Z12 Ultra SE runs Formuler’s own Android with its own launcher. It is not Google certified Android TV, so there is no proper Google TV experience, and Netflix will not play in HD on it. If Netflix, Disney+ and friends in full quality are a big part of your evenings, pick one of the six above and install your player app there. If you mainly want a dedicated MYTVOnline box with Dolby Vision, this is the one, and it sits last on the list for exactly that reason. For the whole Formuler family side by side, including where the GTV 4K fits as the only Google certified model, see my Formuler lineup comparison. If you are weighing up the older Z11 boxes instead, I covered them in my Formuler Z11 buying guide.
Where is the Fire TV Stick?
Not here, and that is deliberate. Amazon’s newer sticks are moving to Vega OS, and sideloading your own player app on Fire devices has become more of a hassle than it should be. Fire TV is still fine if you live inside Prime Video and the Amazon Appstore. For a player box that runs Google Play apps without arguments, the seven above are the shortlist. For the wider picture beyond boxes, including phones, Apple and Windows, see my IPTV hardware guide for 2026.
Which one should you actually buy?
- Main living room telly, wired internet, no compromises: SHIELD TV Pro, or the Google TV Streamer if you want something newer and cheaper.
- Good box, smaller budget: Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen).
- Bedroom or second TV: Xiaomi TV Stick 4K, or the slot five pick for your country.
- UK and you want 32GB plus a LAN port in a cheaper box: MECOOL MEon1.
- You live in MYTVOnline and do not care about Netflix in HD: Formuler Z12 Ultra SE. Everyone else, stick with a Google certified box above.
Whichever you pick, it will only ever be as legal as what you put on it. The box is a player. Feed it licensed services and it will behave beautifully. Feed it dodgy stuff and no amount of AI upscaling will upscale your excuse.
Best IPTV boxes to buy
These are media boxes and sticks that can run players and licensed apps. The first six are Google certified Android TV or Google TV devices with Google Play; the last one, the Formuler, runs its own Android and is not certified. They are not pirate hardware. They do not come with channels or playlists. I am not claiming I personally lab-tested every SKU this month.
Buy one of these when: Fire TV sideload is a hassle on your model, you want Play Store apps on a proper TV OS, or you want a dedicated player shell behind the sofa. No Fire TV device is on this shortlist.
- NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro: the premium pick, a certified Android TV player with AI upscaling, Dolby Vision/Atmos and Gigabit Ethernet for the main living-room telly. Amazon UK | Amazon US | Amazon DE | Amazon FR | Amazon IT
- Google TV Streamer 4K: solid Google TV living-room default with Ethernet, 32GB storage and Dolby Vision/Atmos. Amazon UK | Amazon US | Amazon DE | Amazon FR | Amazon IT
- Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen): Google TV box with 32GB storage, Wi-Fi 6 and Dolby Vision/Atmos, the cheaper box route than the Streamer. Amazon UK | Amazon US | Amazon DE | Amazon FR | Amazon IT
- Xiaomi TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen): budget Google TV stick with Wi-Fi 6 and Dolby Vision/Atmos when you want HDMI-simple, not a full box. Amazon UK | Amazon US | Amazon DE | Amazon FR | Amazon IT
- Budget Google TV 4K player: a cheaper certified Google TV player for a second telly. The model differs by store, so each link names the one you get there. MECOOL KD3 (Amazon UK) | onn. Google TV 4K Streaming Box (Amazon US) | Strong LEAP-NOVA-X (Amazon DE) | Strong LEAP-NOVA-X (Amazon FR) | Strong LEAP-NOVA-X (Amazon IT)
- MECOOL MEon1: Google TV certified 4K box with AI upscaling and 32GB storage for a dedicated player behind the sofa. Amazon UK
- Formuler Z12 Ultra SE: the newest Formuler box, built around MYTVOnline 4 for IPTV playlists. It runs Formuler’s own Android rather than certified Google TV, so there is no Netflix in HD and it is the one box here without Google certification. Formuler Z12 Ultra SE (Amazon UK) | Formuler Z12 Ultra SE (Amazon US) | Formuler Z12 Ultra SE (Amazon DE) | Formuler Z12 Ultra SE (Amazon FR) | Formuler Z12 Ultra SE (Amazon IT)
Still shopping for a Fire TV device? Fine for Prime Video and the Appstore universe. Not the shortlist above. And none of these boxes magically make unlicensed streams legal.
