Vodafone’s autumn pitch ties two stories together: a new TV hub for the living room, and a premium mobile tier called Vodafone SuperMobile with 5G+ FastTrack for when you leave the house. The press line is seductive for streamers – up to 4x faster in high-demand areas, priority data, a companion app that continues a show on the move. I read the footnotes. Most people who just want iPlayer on the train do not need the priority tier. Some busy-commute and event-day users might. Here is the sceptical split.

What SuperMobile and 5G+ FastTrack claim
In Vodafone’s wording, SuperMobile sits above standard Vodafone Mobile plans. The headline feature is 5G+ FastTrack: network prioritisation in busy places, described as creating a dedicated lane or slice for your data when demand spikes. Marketing points you should treat as press claims, not lab certificates:
- Up to 4x faster speeds when connected to 5G+ FastTrack in high-demand areas, compared with Vodafone’s standard plans (press caveats apply; this is not a promise on every street corner). That “up to 4x” line appears once in the launch story – I will not repeat it as a sofa guarantee.
- Up to 2x faster framing on ordinary 4G or 5G when you are not on FastTrack, again versus standard plans in their copy.
- Prioritisation up to 600GB per month. Footnotes on the Vodafone TV press release and SuperMobile pages say access to those premium network features (faster speed / prioritisation) is available for up to 600GB each billing cycle. After that, data continues, but without the FastTrack benefit until the next cycle.
- Minimum speed story: Vodafone’s consumer pages have cited a guaranteed minimum download (around 15Mbps) while on FastTrack in the right conditions, with a right-to-leave style remedy if they cannot fix a validated shortfall. Soften that as marketing-plus-terms, not a lab number – read the live Vodafone terms for the plan you buy; this pack does not replace the contract PDF.
You also need a compatible 5G+ device, coverage in the places you actually walk, and the SuperMobile plan itself. FastTrack is not a software toggle you enable on a random PAYG SIM.

Do streamers actually need priority data?
Sceptical answer first: most streamers are fine without it.
Standard UK 4G/5G on a decent plan already clears the bitrate bar for HD mobile streaming from licensed apps when the cell is healthy. Buffering on the train is often congestion, underground sections, handovers between cells, or a phone on power saving, not the absence of a FastTrack slice. If your evenings are Wi-Fi at home and your commute is podcasts plus the odd episode, SuperMobile is a lifestyle purchase, not a technical requirement.
Where priority framing is more interesting:
- Regular travel through known crush points (central London stations at rush hour, stadium districts on match days, big festival sites) where Vodafone’s high-demand claim is the whole product.
- People who hotspot a tablet for long journeys and burn serious data while walking the 600GB priority window.
- Households already all-in on Vodafone broadband plus Vodafone TV who want one brand’s companion-app story and can swallow the mobile premium without stretching the budget.
Where I would skip:
- Light streamers under a few tens of GB a month who rarely hit busy cells.
- Anyone whose coverage checker shows weak 5G+ FastTrack where they live and work. Priority on a thin signal is still a thin signal.
- Viewers who can wait for home Wi-Fi. Download on Wi-Fi before you leave; most apps still do this better than any network slice.
Read the caveats like a grown-up
The high-demand comparison claim is against Vodafone’s own standard plans, not a universal speed test trophy. The 600GB figure is a monthly envelope for the enhanced behaviour, not free unlimited turbo forever. Companion-app continuity is on selected content, per the TV press footnotes. Pricing on SuperMobile tiers moves – check the live SuperMobile page for the plan you are actually offered, including any April price-rise ladder they publish on some tariffs.
I will not invent peak Mbps figures, nationwide availability percentages beyond what Vodafone publishes, or a promise that FastTrack fixes every buffer on the Northern line.
Practical checklist before you upgrade
- Coverage – run Vodafone’s network / 5G+ FastTrack tools for home, work and your usual commute, not just the shop postcode.
- Handset – confirm your phone is on their 5G+ compatible list. Older handsets may only see part of the benefit.
- GB – estimate monthly mobile video use. If you are nowhere near the priority window and rarely congested, stay on a standard plan.

If you also care about Vodafone TV’s companion-app path, wait until the October service is live and test on a normal plan first (details in VF42). Keep legal apps only. Priority data does not legalise shady streams.
My take in plain English
SuperMobile is a congestion product wrapped in streaming language. For a lot of UK viewers, home Wi-Fi plus a normal unlimited-ish mobile plan already covers Freely, Netflix, ITVX and the rest on the go. Pay for FastTrack when your life is spent in high-demand cells and you will notice the prioritisation window. Do not pay for a footnote.
