A TikTok doing the rounds (this one, credit where it is due) lists 24 phone brands and the country each one comes from. It is a lovely idea, because half the planet thinks their phone is from somewhere it is not. My mum still believes Nokia is Japanese and nothing I say will change that.

So I took the list, checked every brand against company filings and official sources, and added the small print the TikTok had no room for. The good news: most of it is right. The fun news: a few brands are owned by someone else entirely, two are not really from Hong Kong, and one has not made a phone since 2021. Here it is.

Where 24 phone brands really come from

Brand TikTok says Verified home The small print
Nokia Finland Finland ✅ Nokia the company is in Espoo, but Nokia phones have been made under licence by HMD Global, also in Espoo, since 2016.
Apple United States United States ✅ Cupertino, California.
Samsung South Korea South Korea ✅ Samsung Electronics, Suwon.
OnePlus China China ✅ Shenzhen. Folded back into OPPO as a sub brand in 2021.
Google Pixel United States United States ✅ Google, Mountain View, California.
Huawei China China ✅ Shenzhen.
Sony Japan Japan ✅ Tokyo. Xperia phones still come from Sony itself.
Motorola United States United States, owned by China ⚠️ Motorola Mobility is based in Chicago, but Lenovo (China) has owned it since 2014.
Vivo China China ✅ Dongguan, Guangdong.
LG South Korea South Korea ✅ (retired) ⚠️ Seoul. LG quit the phone business in July 2021, so any new LG phone you are offered is a very old new phone.
Poco China China ✅ Not a separate company: Poco is a Xiaomi brand, Beijing.
Red Magic China China ✅ The gaming line from Nubia, Shenzhen, which is closely tied to ZTE.
Infinix Hong Kong China ❌ Owned by Transsion Holdings, headquartered in Shenzhen. Transsion started life in Hong Kong in 2006 and only listed its shares in Hong Kong on 15 October 2026 (it has been on Shanghai’s STAR Market since 2019), which is probably where the confusion comes from.
iQOO China China ✅ A Vivo sub brand, so also Dongguan.
Tecno Hong Kong China ❌ Same story as Infinix: a Transsion brand, Shenzhen headquarters, huge in Africa and South Asia.
Xiaomi China China ✅ Beijing. Also owns Poco and Redmi.
Asus Taiwan Taiwan ✅ Taipei. Zenfone and ROG Phone.
OPPO China China ✅ Dongguan, Guangdong. Parent of OnePlus and, since January 2026, Realme again.
Honor China China ✅ Shenzhen. Spun out of Huawei in 2020 and now fully independent.
Nothing United Kingdom United Kingdom ✅ London, founded by Carl Pei (yes, the OnePlus co founder) in 2020. Phones are built in China and India, like almost everyone’s.
Lenovo China China ✅ Beijing, with a second base in North Carolina. Sells phones mostly under the Motorola name.
Doro Sweden Sweden ✅ Malmö. The big button phones your gran actually likes.
Realme China China ✅ Shenzhen. Started as an OPPO offshoot in 2018 and was pulled back under OPPO as a sub brand in January 2026.
Panasonic Japan Japan ✅ Osaka. Phones are rare outside Japan and India these days.

What the TikTok got wrong (politely)

  • Infinix and Tecno are not Hong Kong brands. Both belong to Transsion, whose headquarters and registered office are in Shenzhen, mainland China. It has an office in Hong Kong and a brand new Hong Kong share listing, but that does not make it a Hong Kong company any more than my Netflix account makes me American.
  • Motorola is American on the outside and Chinese on the cap table. Chicago headquarters, Lenovo ownership.
  • LG is correct, but historic. South Korean, yes. Phone maker, no longer.
  • Nokia is correct, with a twist. Finnish brand, Finnish licensee (HMD), but not the original Nokia making the phones.

Everything else checks out. Score: 22 out of 24, which is better than my school geography report.

The family tree nobody tells you about

Count the parents and 24 brands shrink fast. Xiaomi owns Poco. Vivo owns iQOO. OPPO owns OnePlus and Realme. Transsion owns Tecno and Infinix (plus itel). Lenovo owns Motorola. Huawei gave birth to Honor and then let it leave home. So when two phones look suspiciously similar on a shop shelf, they may well have the same mum.

And one honest footnote: “where a brand comes from” is about headquarters and ownership. Where your phone is physically built is a different question, and for most brands on this list the answer is China, India or Vietnam regardless of the flag on the box.

Best IPTV boxes to buy

These are media boxes and sticks that can run players and licensed apps. The first six are Google certified Android TV or Google TV devices with Google Play; the last one, the Formuler, runs its own Android and is not certified. They are not pirate hardware. They do not come with channels or playlists. I am not claiming I personally lab-tested every SKU this month.

Buy one of these when: Fire TV sideload is a hassle on your model, you want Play Store apps on a proper TV OS, or you want a dedicated player shell behind the sofa. No Fire TV device is on this shortlist.

Still shopping for a Fire TV device? Fine for Prime Video and the Appstore universe. Not the shortlist above. And none of these boxes magically make unlicensed streams legal.
