Get Ready for GTA 6: Preload, Storage and World Unlock Times Before 19 November 2026

After two delays, one Netflix special, a leaked map and more than a decade of people asking “is it out yet?” in every comment section on the internet, Rockstar is still holding the line: Grand Theft Auto VI launches on Thursday 19 November 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and preloading opens at local midnight on Thursday 12 November. That gives you four weeks until the preload and just over five until launch to sort out the boring bits, which is exactly where launch nights usually fall apart. Not on the game. On the 3% free storage, the code that will not redeem on your account, and the console that went into deep sleep and downloaded nothing.

This is a get-ready guide, not a review. Nobody outside Rockstar has played the finished game, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. What I have done is read the official Take-Two press release, Rockstar’s own support FAQ, and the live PlayStation Store and Xbox listings, and turned the small print into a dated checklist that works wherever you live.

What is actually confirmed (and what is not)

  • Release date: 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar’s support page lists only those two platforms. No PC version has been announced, and nothing has been announced for Switch 2, Android or iPhone either.
  • Preload: Rockstar’s FAQ says preloading begins at local midnight on 12 November 2026 for digital pre-orders. The PlayStation Store calls it a “7-Day Pre-load”.
  • The boxed version has no disc. Rockstar is blunt about it: the physical box contains a download code, and “a disc will not be included in the box”. Boxes are expected in shops and in the post from 12 November.
  • There is no boxed Ultimate Edition. Physical buyers get the Standard Edition code and can buy the Ultimate Edition Upgrade digitally after redeeming it.
  • Pre-order bonus: pre-orders and purchases before 20 November 2026 get the Vintage Vice City Pack. Digital pre-orders also get one month of GTA+.
  • PS5 Pro: the PlayStation Store listing carries the “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label. Rockstar’s site says the game “plays best on PlayStation 5”, which is the sort of sentence that only appears when a marketing deal has been signed somewhere.
  • Not confirmed as of 14 October 2026: the download or install size, the exact Xbox unlock time, any day-one patch, and any PC release. If someone online quotes you a precise number of gigabytes, ask them which store page it came from. Neither store shows one yet.

Prices I checked on the official stores

These are Standard and Ultimate Edition prices from the PlayStation Store in each country, checked on 14 October 2026. The US prices also match Take-Two’s own press release. Stores, Xbox and retailers can differ, US prices are before sales tax, and anything can change before launch, so treat this as a snapshot, not a promise.

Store Standard Ultimate
United Kingdom £69.99 £89.99
United States $79.99 $99.99
Germany and France €79.99 €99.99
Canada C$109.99 C$139.99
Australia A$129.95 A$159.95
New Zealand NZ$139.95 NZ$174.95
Japan ¥9,800 ¥12,280
India Rs 5,999 Rs 7,499
United Arab Emirates AED 299.16 AED 373.96

That UAE figure is exactly what the store showed me, decimals and all. It looks like a converted dollar price rather than a number anyone chose on purpose, and other trackers have seen that store priced in US dollars, so check what your own account shows before you budget to the fils.

When it unlocks where you live

Rockstar has not published official unlock times. What we do have is the release time baked into each country’s PlayStation Store listing, and on every listing I checked it lands at midnight on 19 November in that store’s main time zone. So the launch rolls around the planet like New Year’s Eve, with New Zealand getting the fireworks first and the US West Coast getting them while it is still Wednesday evening.

PlayStation Store Local unlock UK time (GMT)
New Zealand 00:00 Thu 19 Nov (NZDT) 11:00 Wed 18 Nov
Australia (Sydney, Melbourne) 00:00 Thu 19 Nov (AEDT) 13:00 Wed 18 Nov
Japan 00:00 Thu 19 Nov (JST) 15:00 Wed 18 Nov
India 00:00 Thu 19 Nov (IST) 18:30 Wed 18 Nov
United Arab Emirates 00:00 Thu 19 Nov (GST) 20:00 Wed 18 Nov
Germany, France (CET) 00:00 Thu 19 Nov 23:00 Wed 18 Nov
United Kingdom 00:00 Thu 19 Nov 00:00 Thu 19 Nov
US and Canada Eastern 00:00 Thu 19 Nov (ET) 05:00 Thu 19 Nov
US Pacific 21:00 Wed 18 Nov (PT) 05:00 Thu 19 Nov

Three warnings. First, these are store listing times, not a Rockstar announcement, and listings get edited before big launches. Second, the Xbox listing I checked shows a date but no time, so Xbox players should not assume they match PlayStation to the minute. Third, if you live in one country but your console account is registered in another, look at the listing for your account’s store, not the one for wherever you happen to be sitting. By November the clocks have changed in Europe and North America, so the gaps above are the winter ones.

The small print that will actually bite

1. The box is a voucher with good packaging

The physical edition is a code in a box. No disc means no installing from a disc on launch night, no lending it to your cousin, and no realistic pre-owned bargain, because a redeemed code is spent. On the bright side, it also means a PS5 Digital Edition or Xbox Series S owner can buy the boxed version without worrying about the missing disc drive. And if your box ships late, Rockstar says the code can be used as soon as you receive it, which is cold comfort if the courier delivers on the 19th and you are still downloading at breakfast.

2. PlayStation codes are locked to your account’s region

This is the one that will catch travellers and bargain hunters. Rockstar’s FAQ says PlayStation codes only work on accounts registered to the matching set of countries. The UK is its own group. North America is Canada plus the US. Saudi Arabia and the UAE share one. Australia, India, New Zealand, most of the EU, Switzerland, Turkey, South Africa and others sit in a big “Rest of EMEA and Asia” group. Japan codes also expire 170 days after launch. So a cheap boxed copy from an Irish or German shop will not redeem on a UK PlayStation account, and a US box will not work on an Emirati one. Xbox codes, according to the same FAQ, are not region-locked. Rockstar’s own advice is to buy from a retailer in the same country as your console account. For once, I agree with the corporate advice.

3. The free GTA+ month turns into a paid one

The month of GTA+ that comes with digital pre-orders auto-renews at the regular monthly price until you cancel. On PlayStation it has to be redeemed by 31 March 2027. On Xbox it has to be redeemed within 180 days of your pre-order, it is limited to one per account, and the Xbox listing says it is not available to child accounts with age restrictions. Put a reminder in your phone for the day before it renews. “Free trial” is the oldest magic trick in subscriptions and it still works on most of us.

4. There is no PC download, demo or Android version, so anything offering one is lying

In August, Malwarebytes documented fake “GTA 6 demo” sites impersonating Rockstar that handed out a 1.1 MB “installer”. That is smaller than a holiday photo, and it was not a game. It was the Vidar password stealer, designed to lift saved browser passwords and logged-in sessions. A real GTA download comes from the PlayStation Store, the Microsoft Store or Rockstar’s store, onto a console. If a website, Telegram channel or “leak” account offers you GTA 6 for a PC or phone before Rockstar announces one, close the tab. If you already ran something, change your important passwords from a clean device and use each service’s “sign out everywhere” option, because stolen session cookies can survive a simple password change.

5. It is rated 18

The UK Xbox listing shows a PEGI 18 rating for drugs, sex and violence. If the console in your house belongs to a teenager, now is the time to look at family settings, not at 00:01 on launch night when negotiations are at their least rational.

Storage: plan for “big”, because nobody has published the number

There is no official install size yet. The honest plan is to free up a generous amount of space now and then check the real figure on the store page when the preload opens on 12 November. A few platform rules that are confirmed by Sony and Microsoft themselves:

  • PS5: PS5 games cannot be played from a USB drive. You can, however, move PS5 games you have finished onto USB extended storage to free up the internal drive, then copy them back later. Sony’s requirements: SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or faster, 250 GB to 8 TB, plugged straight into the console rather than through a hub. You can also fit an M.2 SSD if you want more internal space.
  • Xbox Series X|S: a normal USB hard drive or SSD can store games optimised for Series X|S but cannot play them. To play from extra storage you need a Storage Expansion Card. Shuffling finished games off to USB is still the cheapest way to make room.
  • Check, do not guess: on PS5 go to Settings, then Storage. On Xbox go to Settings, System, Storage devices. The capacity printed on the box is not the free space you actually have, because the system software takes its cut first.

Broadband: the maths, without invented file sizes

Since there is no official size, here is the arithmetic per 100 GB, so you can scale it once the real number appears. These are best-case figures with the line running flat out and the servers not under launch-week siege, which they will be.

  • 30 Mbps: about 7 hours 25 minutes per 100 GB
  • 50 Mbps: about 4 hours 25 minutes per 100 GB
  • 100 Mbps: about 2 hours 15 minutes per 100 GB
  • 500 Mbps: about 27 minutes per 100 GB
  • 900 Mbps: about 15 minutes per 100 GB

Run a test from the room the console lives in with my husham.com speed test, then run the console’s own network test, because the number your provider prints on the bill and the number your console actually gets through two walls and a fish tank are rarely on speaking terms. If they are miles apart, the fix is usually an Ethernet cable or a better Wi-Fi spot, not a pricier package. I explained why a faster plan does not always mean faster delivery in why 10Gbps internet still buffers; the same logic applies to a game download.

Make sure the console downloads while you sleep

PS5: go to Settings, System, Power Saving, Features Available in Rest Mode, and turn on Stay Connected to the Internet. Then go to Settings, Saved Data and Game/App Settings, Automatic Updates, and turn on Auto-Download. Sony says a PlayStation Store pre-order with automatic downloads switched on starts downloading as soon as it is available, and the GTA 6 listing adds that auto-download needs Automatic Login and Auto Sign-In switched on. Leave the PS5 in rest mode on the night of 11 to 12 November. Fully off means fully idle.

Xbox Series X|S: check Settings, General, Power options. Microsoft says Shutdown (energy saving) still receives game downloads overnight during a nightly maintenance window, which Xbox described as between 2am and 6am. Sleep keeps the console ready and allows remote wake. If you want it grabbing the preload soon after midnight rather than whenever the maintenance window gets round to it, Sleep is the safer setting for that week. One catch: in Sleep, Xbox “active hours” can fully shut the console down outside the hours you normally play, so make sure midnight is inside them or the preload waits for the maintenance window anyway. Switch back afterwards if you care about the electricity bill.

Your dated GTA 6 checklist

  • This week (from 14 October): pick your platform and edition. If buying boxed, buy from a shop in the same country as your console account, and on PlayStation double-check the region group above. Read the retailer’s cancellation policy while you are calm.
  • By the end of October: do the storage clear-out. Move finished games to USB, delete the ones you were “definitely going back to” in 2023, and note how much space is really free.
  • First week of November: run a speed test from the console’s room and the console’s network test. Sort out an Ethernet cable or powerline adapter now, not on 12 November when every shop in the country has sold out of long cables.
  • By Wednesday 11 November: install any console system update, set PS5 rest mode internet and Auto-Download, or Xbox power options. Check your payment method too. The UK PlayStation listing says pre-orders need immediate payment, so there is no surprise charge waiting there, but other stores and retailers may bill differently.
  • Thursday 12 November, local midnight: preload opens. Check the real download size on the store, start it, and check it is progressing in the morning. Boxed buyers: redeem the code the moment it arrives.
  • 13 to 18 November: make sure the download shows as complete. Leave the console in rest mode or sleep rather than fully off, in case a patch lands before launch.
  • 18 and 19 November: unlock time arrives in your country, following the table above. I would expect busy servers in the first hours whatever your broadband does.
  • By 19 November, 23:59:59 on the store: last call for the pre-order bonus wording on the PlayStation and Xbox listings.
  • Before the GTA+ month ends: cancel it or decide to keep it. Your bank statement will not ask first.

One last practical point. If GTA 6 is about to take over the main telly for the foreseeable future, everyone else in the house still needs a screen with their apps on it. These are the streaming boxes I point people at for the second TV:

Best IPTV boxes to buy

These are media boxes and sticks that can run players and licensed apps. The first six are Google certified Android TV or Google TV devices with Google Play; the last one, the Formuler, runs its own Android and is not certified. They are not pirate hardware. They do not come with channels or playlists. I am not claiming I personally lab-tested every SKU this month.

Buy one of these when: Fire TV sideload is a hassle on your model, you want Play Store apps on a proper TV OS, or you want a dedicated player shell behind the sofa. No Fire TV device is on this shortlist.

Still shopping for a Fire TV device? Fine for Prime Video and the Appstore universe. Not the shortlist above. And none of these boxes magically make unlicensed streams legal.
