How to Convert Your Router to 5G (or 6G) for UK Broadband Providers

Converting to 5G or 6G & Enabling Split Wi-Fi

After logging into your router, follow these instructions to enable a dual-band network:

  • Select the Wireless Band:Locate the settings for Wireless Mode, Frequency, or Band. Many routers allow you to switch from a combined (unified) network to a split network where 2.4GHz and 5GHz (or 6GHz) operate independently.
  • Enable 5G or 6G:If your router supports it, you may see options for 5GHz and, on some newer models, 6GHz. Choose the desired band(s) for your network. Note that routers supporting Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) offer enhanced performance compared to older standards.
  • Configure Separate SSIDs:Assign distinct names to your networks (for example, “HomeWiFi-2.4GHz” and “HomeWiFi-5GHz”). This makes it easier to connect your devices to the correct network.
  • Save and Apply Changes:Once you’ve made the necessary changes, save your settings. Your router may restart to apply the new configuration.

Remember: The exact location and wording of these settings can vary by router model and firmware. If you’re unsure, consult your router’s manual or your ISP’s support website.
