I nearly updated the living-room box on muscle memory. Saw “Piers” and “Beta 2” on the official mirrors, coffee still hot, remote already in hand. Then I remembered the last time I treated a prerelease like a Tuesday patch and spent an evening rebuilding a library because I skipped the backup warning. Again.
So this is the calmer version. Kodi’s team published Kodi 22 “Piers” Beta 2 on 5 September 2026. The Windows and Android packages on the public mirrors are dated around 1 September. Stable daily drivers should still sit on Kodi 21.3 Omega. Beta 2 is for people who want the new stuff and can tolerate a wobble.
If youre hunting pirate add-on lists, wrong article. This is about the official media centre build: your own files, legal streams, PVR backends you already run. Nothing bundled. You add what you’re allowed to use.
What Beta 2 actually is
Team Kodi’s own write-up calls this the second Beta of v22. Focus is polish on top of Beta 1, not a brand-new feature dump from scratch. They say Beta 2 merges over a cumulative 100 fixes beyond Beta 1. HDR got a lot of attention. Language tags and JSON-RPC got love. Pulse-Eight CEC users get expanded handling.
Under the hood bits that matter if you care about “why does this feel smoother”:
FFmpeg jumped to v9.0.1.
Libbluray to v1.5.0.
Python to v3.14.7 (Pillow 12.3.0 with it).
Samba to v4.24.4.
libcec to v8.1.6.
That stack upgrade is why I treat Betas carefully on the main lounge PC. Add-ons and binary helpers written against older expectations can sulk. Sometimes they don’t. I still take a backup first.
The changes I’d actually notice on the sofa
Not reading the whole changelog out loud. Here’s what jumped out when I scanned the official Beta 2 post and the mirror filenames.
Video and HDR
Lots of playback edge cases got patched: AV1 pixel format detection, fullscreen dimensions on 50 Hz TVs, FPS detection on MPEG transport streams, HDMI signal drop on some content, skip accuracy while paused, moving Kodi between Windows screens, Android resume quirks on H.264 TS files, a VC-1 stutter regression on Android TV, sync-to-display on some GBM setups.
HDR specifically: screenshots of HDR content are enabled, tonemap colourimetry fixes, stale HDR metadata in video info cleaned up, Dolby Vision plus PGS subtitle combo on Android, HDR transfer PQ on webOS, HDR10 HEVC Main 10 on macOS, and bad light-metadata sources.
If your box lives on HDR content, this is the bit of Beta 2 that feels less like a vanity release.
Blu-ray, bookmarks, audio
Blu-ray episode handling, playlist selection, and disc detection speed improved with Libbluray 1.5.0. Bookmark and chapter jump bugs got attention (including the silly “two chapters in the first second thing).
Audio side: ReplayGain PreAmp centred at 0 dB instead of the old 89 dB default, M2TS parser fixes for DTS/TrueHD/LPCM, MPEG-TS probe issues that broke DTS metadata, HDR plus passthrough audio dropouts, webOS distortion, and a “repeat all” skip-first-track bug.
I have a friend who only notices audio bugs. He’ll care more about this paragraph than the HDR one. Fair.
Library, UI, games, PVR
Library: artwork for movie series, watched status freshness, Nordic accent sorting, empty TV show display, archive folder name ignore setting, BDMV naming, trailer playback after a Blu-ray ISO has been played. UI adds SVG image support and fixes jerky long-text scrolling.
Games: full RetroAchievements support, remembering emulators per game/folder, Fairchild Channel F, rumble and audio fixes. PVR: smart select in the Guide, channel switch video loss on some embedded platforms, timer dialog reminder types.
JSON-RPC grew methods like Database.GetDatabaseName, VideoLibrary.SetSourceContent, PVR.GetPlayableBroadcasts, plus better BCP 47 language support. Useful if you script Kodi rather than only click remotes.
How I decide: install Beta 2 or stay on 21.3
My rule after too many late nights:
Stay on 21.3 Omega if this is the only living-room box, kids use it, or you can’t afford an evening of “why is the skin broken.”
Try Beta 2 on a spare PC, a secondary Android box, or a profile you can wipe. Especially if you care about the HDR/Blu-ray/CEC fixes above.
Team Kodi still says take a backup first. They’re not being dramatic. Export your sources list. Note add-on versions. Screenshot Settings. If you use a shared MySQL/MariaDB library across machines, do not casually point a Beta at the same database your stable boxes use unless you know what you’re doing.
Known issue called out in the Beta 2 post: if a build ships without their patched TagLib 2.3.1, Matroska tagging degrades back toward v21 behaviour. Worth remembering if music tags look weird after an install.
Where to download (official only)
1. Open kodi.tv/download.
2. Pick your platform (Windows, Android, Linux, etc.).
3. Open the Prerelease section.
4. Grab Kodi 22.0 Piers Beta 2 for that platform.
I verified the public mirrors personally for this piece. Examples that were live when I checked:
kodi-22.0-Piers_beta2-x64.exe under the Windows win64 releases tree.
kodi-22.0-Piers_beta2-armeabi-v7a.apk under Android ARM releases.
Both sat on the official rsync.kodi.tv / mirrors.kodi.tv release paths with September 2026 timestamps. If a random blog hands you a renamed APK from a file host, close the tab. Official download page or official mirrors. That’s it.
Android tip from lived mess: allow installs from the source you actually use, install the matching architecture APK, then open Kodi once before you start adding repositories. Windows tip: install over a test profile first if you can. Don’t nuke the family one “because Beta sounded finished.
What I do after install
Confirm the version string says 22.0-Piers and Beta 2 (or the build label your package shows).
Add one local movie folder. Play something HDR if you’ve got it. Skip chapters. Toggle subtitles.
If you use CEC, wake the TV once with the remote and make sure power-off still behaves.
Only then bring back your heavier add-ons one at a time.
If something explodes, file a GitHub issue with a full debug log like the team asks. Vague “Kodi broken pls fix” threads help nobody. I learned that the hard way years ago and still cringe.
Legal / player-only note (yes, again)
Kodi is a player and media centre. It does not ship TV channels or movie packs. Same rule I repeat for every player post on this site: you add sources you are legally allowed to use. If someone sells you a “fully loaded Beta APK with mystery repos, walk away.

Beta 2 is real, recent, and worth a look on a spare box. Keep 21.3 on the main screen until you’re happy. Backup first. Download from Kodi. Then tell me what broke so I can update this when RC season starts.
